Upstate Resident Talks Her Way Into a College Scholarship
CLEMSON, SC – Travelers Rest, SC resident
Stephanie Moore talked her way into a $500 college scholarship
and an all expenses paid trip to a national competition in
February. Moore is the winner of the 2005 Clemson University
Collegiate Discussion Meet sponsored by the SC Farm Bureau
Young Farmer and Rancher Committee. The annual contest was
held conjunction with Clemson
University’s
College of
Agriculture,
Forestry, and Life Sciences Tailgate festivities.
The discussion meet is a contest, much like a
debate team contest where contestants discuss specific topics
related to agriculture in an effort to convince a panel of
judges that they are the most knowledgeable of the topic among
their competitors.
Moore is a sophomore majoring in Agricultural
Education at Clemson. In addition to her cash scholarship
award she will receive an expense-paid-trip to represent
Clemson and South Carolina in the third annual American Farm
Bureau Collegiate Discussion Meet contest that will be held
next February in Des Moines, Iowa.
South Carolina Farm Bureau Director of Young
Farmer Programs Faith Lawrimore said, “Farm Bureau’s strength
depends on its members’ ability to analyze agricultural issues
and determine solutions that best meet their needs. The
Collegiate Discussion Meet is an activity designed to build
these crucial skills in young, active leaders in agriculture
on the collegiate level.” By participating, contestants build
basic discussion skills, develop a keen understanding of
important agricultural issues, and experience team dynamics as
they pool knowledge to reach consensus and solve problems.
