Women Attend State Conference
The 2007 South Carolina Farm Bureau Annual
Women's Leadership Conference was held recently in
Newberry. More than 90 women attended the conference.
Farm Bureau Women at county, state, and
national levels coordinate public relations activities and
projects promoting agriculture. Their work includes
supporting important family and agricultural legislation,
youth programs, “Education in AG-tion” activities,
leadership development opportunities, and commodity
promotions.
According to Director of Women’s Programs
Faith Lawrimore, “Recent years have been quite challenging
for many South Carolina families earning their livelihood
raising crops and livestock. The SC Farm Bureau Women’s
Committee has recognized this and works hard to educate the
public about farming. Their dedication, knowledge and
interest in agriculture contribute much to the organization,
as they work for the future success of farming in our
state.”
Deborah Ford,
author of the bestselling books Grits Guide to Life,
Puttin’ on the Grits, and Grits Friends are
Forevah entertained attendees with her stories and
“Girls Raised in the South” or GRITS. Other workshops
focused on women’s health issues, “Ag in the Classroom”
advances, and training for confernce attendees.
Conference
participants visited two agribusinesses recognized
nationally and worldwide for excellence in agriculture and
marketing. Carter & Holmes Orchids was the first tour stop
where attendees learned about the science of growing
orchids. The women also learned how Bill Carter and Owen
Holmes changed their floriculture business over the years to
meet changing consumer interests and demands. The second
tour stop was Bush River Jerseys, Newberry County’s
multigenerational family owned and operated dairy that
bottles milk on the farm and markets their product through
many avenues, including “Vend-A-MOOs”, milk on-the-go
vending machines.
The SC Farm Bureau Federation is a non-profit
membership organization formed to promote and preserve the
work of family farmers and rural lifestyles across the
state. In exchange for their annual dues and financial
support of education, promotion, and lobbying efforts on
behalf of agriculture and family farmers, Farm Bureau
members are entitled to discounts and access to a number of
quality products and services.
Persons interested in supporting the efforts
of local farm women can contact their county
Farm Bureau for additional
