Calhoun County Farm Bureau
Nationally Recognized for Ag-Education Project
St.
Matthews, SC -
Calhoun County Farm Bureau was recognized recently by the
American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) as having one of the
best agricultural education and promotion activities in the
country. AFBF honored Calhoun County Farm Bureau with the
County Activities of Excellence Award presented during the
national organization’s annual meeting in Salt Lake City,
Utah in January.
Calhoun
County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee Chair Rosalind Carson,
Women’s Committee member Sherry Houck, and Calhoun County
Farm Bureau Secretary and Women’s Committee member Barbara
Haigler were flown by AFBF to the national annual meeting to
display their project at the convention’s trade show.
The
winning activity is a Commodity Christmas Tree contest that
was open to the entire county’s fifth and eighth grade
students. Students decorated trees with commodities grown in
South Carolina before the trees were displayed and judged on
uniqueness and appearance. Each grade level winner received
a pizza party courtesy of Calhoun County Farm Bureau. The
idea was one suggested through the SC Ag in the Classroom
“Hands On” booklet for Farm Bureau members.
The three
Calhoun County women shipped a small version of a decorated
Christmas tree with the ornaments that the students made to
Salt Lake City, where they placed it in a display to explain
the project. AFBF President Bob Stallman, who represents the
national organization’s more than six million members, said,
“Calhoun County’s idea is truly a unique way to tell the
farm story to young people. It is an activity that combines
research and creativity in a way that the students are sure
to remember important South Carolina produced commodities.”
South
Carolina Farm Bureau President and Sumter County farmer
David Winkles said, “Farm Bureau is all about agriculture
and this is a great way to get the message out. I am very
proud of the members of the Calhoun County Farm Bureau and
especially proud of the county Women’s Committee for taking
the initiative to conduct such a worthwhile project. If we
can get the accurate farm message into the minds of young
people, they will become much better informed consumers when
they grow older.”
Farm
Bureau is an agricultural membership organization with a
mission to protect and preserve family farms and rural
lifestyles in South Carolina.
