Farm Bureau Calls on State to Consider Farmers’ Needs as Fuel Supplies Run Short

Columbia, SC – South Carolina Farm Bureau President David Winkles has called on SC Commissioner of Agriculture Hugh Weathers to exercise his full constitutional authority to protect farmers from rising fuel costs and short supplies.

Winkles said, “This is the time of year when many farmers experience peak fuel use because of harvesting corn, soybeans, peanuts, tobacco, and cotton. They use fuel in farm machines to harvest the commodities in the field, to prepare them for storage, and to ship them to market. I have asked Commissioner Weathers to work with the Governor and other state officials to make sure farmers’ needs are strongly considered in the event priorities are set for fuel use in South Carolina.”

Winkles said farmers in rural areas have reported that their local fuel supplies are dry. “Farmers are harvesting perishable commodities that need to be handled in a timely manner, otherwise they could lose a year’s investment on the farm,” Winkles said.

The SCFB president also called on Farm Bureau’s 130,500 member families to be in prayer for families affected by Hurricane Katrina and to support financial relief efforts through charities of their choice if possible.
